‘UK’s largest’ people-powered wind farm

Ripple Energy is spearheading an ambitious project in the Scottish Borders to create the largest people-owned wind farm in the UK. Located at Whitelaw Brae near Tweedsmuir, this endeavor offers individuals the opportunity to collectively own turbines, democratizing access to renewable energy.

Expected to become operational by late 2026, the wind farm aims to supply renewable energy to more than 50,000 homes annually, generating approximately 145GWh per year. This substantial contribution to the country’s renewable energy capacity underscores the project’s significance in meeting sustainability targets.

Sarah Merrick, CEO of Ripple Energy, emphasizes the project’s role in providing an alternative avenue for individuals to benefit from clean energy. She highlights the challenges faced by ordinary people and businesses in accessing wind energy, despite its affordability compared to other sources.

John Milligan, Managing Director at BayWa r.e. UK Ltd., underscores the importance of onshore wind farm development in achieving the UK’s net-zero emission goals. He expresses optimism about the public’s enthusiasm for projects like Whitelaw Brae, recognizing the collective effort needed to transition to a more sustainable energy landscape.
